I'll be spending a year in Vancouver. I have Verizon in California. Will I have to switch my phone / service when I move up there?

We do not have Verizon in Canada. Your phone will work in Canada but you will pay a fortune in roaming charges. You need to suspend your Verizon account. In Canada you can go to a Virgin Mobile or most any other cell phone kiosk in any mall and get a no contract phone there.
I had Sprint when I was in California and got a FIDO phone when I moved to Vancouver.
Canada has about 5 major ans several minor providers. Just note that cell phone service is a fair but more expensive in Canada.

Unless Verizon offers a really good roaming deal, then yes, you'll need a new service. You might be able to keep your same phone by just switching the SIM card, but only if the phone is unlocked.
If you're a student, Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile have some good deals. Otherwise there's Wind and other's, that are discount providers. The main companies are Bell, Telus, and Rogers. Most other companies are a subsidiary of one of those three, like Fido, Chatr, Koodo, Virgin...

Essentially....there is NO Verizon Wireless Canada..I believe Verizon customers use the Telus network when in Canada-this involves roaming charges -any calls back to the U.S would be billed as long distance calls from Vancouver,BC,Canada-including calls that you may have for "free" now- to other Verizon users perhaps ,for example.Your best bet if you're going to be here for a full year is to drop your Verizon service and sign on with a Canadian cell phone company when you move here.

Yes Im Pretty Sure! We dont have Verizon! I'd Recommend You Switching To Wind For Good Deals! Data add-on is only $5/month with Wind Mobile while If you go to Bell you would have to Pay $15/month data add on! Fido is also really good although pricey but great coverage! Wind has not bad coverage except for the Mundy Park, Coquitlam area(if your going to live in that area get fido, not wind)
But if you also get wind and head down to any part of the states that has coverage you well be switched from Wind mobile to T-Mobile when your in the states and is only 10cents/minute if your calling someone anywhere in canada and US, same with texting!
Either Wind For Execellent Deals!
OR
Either Fido For Better Coverage!

I don't know if you have to, but if you don't want to get killed with roaming charges, you'd better. If you don't change providers, every call you make will be long distance.

If you mean Washington, you're fine. People do that a lot.
If you mean Canada, you'd probably have to change.

You should get a land line instead. It will be cheaper.
