Question:
Should me & my friends visit Whistler during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics?

We are coming from Toronto, we have tickets to events in Vancouver but we don't have any tickets to events in Whistler. We found a bus company that will take us to Whistler without having tickets. Just wondering if it's worth it to visit Whistler even though we don't have tickets to events? Is there enough to do in the Whistler village area, like just walking around and taking photographs (we are all avid photographers). We aren't really interested in skiing either. How long would we spend there just doing this? Would it be an all day thing, or just a few hours? Is it even worth it, in your opinion?

"Yes" you should see Whistler while here however it will not be as easy, or perhaps easier getting there from pre or post Olympics. The highway will be closed off between Squamish and Whistler between the hours of 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM for all traffic other than the vehicles who have received accreditation of being up there. So, you will not be able to drive there, but the buses are coming and going and it's a matter of connecting with a bus, pay the price, get on and enjoy the ride.

I drove from Vancouver to Whistler twice this past week and the highway has just received a 1/2 billion dollar upgrade and is a beautiful drive. The drive along the BC coast and scenery by itself is worth the drive. To catch the Whistler Olympic fever is also worthwhile going just for that. If you are a skier, the mountains and lifts will still be open and the word on the street is that may be the best time to go skiing as everyone coming think otherwise and will not go.

Here is a link to purchase a bus ticket to Whistler:

Spend a day there. Whistler Square is sure to be lively the whole time. I am guessing there will be tickets kicking around at the last minute for events like the ski jumping. You can still take the gondola up and down even if you just want to take pictures. Whistler will be open for the usual activities even as the events go on. People watching will be good as that is where the jet-set will be.

It would probably be an all day thing. If you aren't interested in skiing, or snowboarding or any of that stuff, there isn't a whole lot else to do in Whistler. You can wander around, but a lot of areas will be off-limits because of the ski events going on. If you are interested in mountain photography, this would be a good time to go up Grouse Mountain (right behind Vancouver) take photographs, wander unrestricted, and enjoy the view.

Spend an afternoon there. Whistler sq. is helpful to be lively the completed time. i'm guessing there'll be tickets kicking around on the final minute for activities like the ski leaping. possible take the gondola up and down whether you only desire to take photos. Whistler would be open for the oftentimes happening events even because of the fact the activities bypass on. people observing would be stable as that's the place the jet-set would be.

You can try getting up to Whistler, but with the accreditation check points, it might not be very easy, but checking out Vancouver will give you some good chances to be able to take some photos, and also as another poster said you will be able to look around Grouse or Seymour, that will remain unrestricted through the Olympics Time. For more information regarding access you might want to take a look at http://www.vancouver2010.com/

no point in coming to whistler for just pics. its too long of a trip, too expensive, and you'll be done taking pictures by lunchtime. it'll also be horribly crowded there, even though it's a nice place, it's not worth the trip to simply take pictures without skiing/snowboarding

p.s. i love how the grammar cop spelt it "freind" at first instead of "friend" after all, he should know that it's i before e except after c, or when it goes a as in neighbor or weight :D

We'll, I'll say it will be worth it. You get to see how Whistler looks like, you can go make friends. There are a lot of bears you can see.
