Vancouver Island is a large island in British Columbia, Canada, off Canada's Pacific coast. It is 460 km (285 miles) long and up to 80 km (50 miles) wide. The largest island on the western side of Canada at 32,134 square kilometres (12,407 square miles), it is the world's 42nd largest island, Canada's 11th largest island and Canada's second most populous island after the Island of Montreal, which has 1.3 million more people. The island is named in honour of George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored the Pacific coast of North America between 1791 and 1794.

The 2001 census population was 656,312. As of 2005, Vancouver Island had an estimated population of 723,000. Slightly less than half of these (326,000) live in Greater Victoria. Other major cities on Vancouver Island include Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville, Courtenay, and Campbell River.

It took me 10 hours to drive from one end to the other back in the late 80s before they built the new highway for going at freeway speeds. Who knows how much less it takes now but its a big, big island with multiple cities, amenities, some pretty sizable lakes, and even a ski resort. When you're on the freeway from Victoria to Langford, you wouldn't even guess you were on an island since most of the other islands in the area are pretty sleepy and laid back.

I loved Vancouver except for the fact I was followed by the Chinese mafia and accidently stumbled into a Russian bar after closing hours. Beautiful trees and I almost smoked pot with that one lead singer from Van Halen but I forgot his name-not the new singer the original one.
