I live in the Lower Mainland. I figured I should explore some other parts of BC... so where's worth going? I'm looking for fun/interesting sights and activities, not shopping and shopping. Please don't say Vancouver or Victoria. ;)

It's all worth going to at least once. Wait till summer or late spring.....a nice drive, and could be done on a weekend, is to go out Hwy 3 to Keremeos and Osoyoos which is wine country, turn north at Osoyoos and back to Vancouver via Kelowna and Merritt. Good variety of scenery, winery tours, some history.

Or take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, drive up the Sunshine Coast, take another ferry to Powell River area, another to Comox, drive down to Nanaimo and get still another ferry back to Horseshoe Bay. I think you can get a special fare for that circle route. That could be done in a weekend but that would be really rushing it. Several days would be better. You can get to Texada Island from Powell River.

Drive from Nanaimo down to Victoria, taking side roads instead of the main highway. Cowichan Bay is a good place to stop at, and you can avoid Victoria altogether if you like by taking the Mill Bay-Brentwood ferry. Butchart Gardens is well worth a visit if you like gardens. Late June is a great time for that, the roses should be out.

If you haven't been to Tofino, you have to go sometime though it gets busy in summer so you pretty much have to book ahead. You might also check out the Lady Rose, an excellent travel bargain if you like coastal scenery. There are a few other coastal freight runs that take passengers. Try Marine Link Tours.

North of Whistler has some nice scenery, you can do a circle trip up through Lillooet and Kamloops and then back down to Vancouver. Slightly demanding driving north of Whistler, but not awful.

Book a B & B on one of the Gulf Islands.

Bowen Island makes a nice day trip, there's easy hiking straight off the ferry.

Sheena and Karen both suggested some great ideas.

I highly recommend the Bowron lakes. They're up by Williams lake, so you can visit the historic town of Barkerville, which has actors playing out the lives of people in a old gold mining town. The lakes take about a week to canoe/kayak around, with many campsites to stay at each night. You'll meet other people from all over the world there, and it's not a difficult trip.

Tofino is also beautiful, and unlike anything you'll see in the Lower Mainland. You haven't really seen the ocean until you see the west coast of Vancouver Island. Rent a cabin on the water, especially in the fall, when the storms come in off the ocean.

You might also like to take the ferry up to the Queen Charlotte Islands. It's another of BC's most unique and beautiful locations.

If those aren't exactly your style. Head into the Okanagan. Weather you like boating, golfing, lying on the beach, lounging in hot springs, or taking winery tours, there's something for you there. In the winter, there's also tons of skiing out there as well.

Get out there, and enjoy our beautiful province!

The Okanagan is known for great beaches and summer fun. The south end (Osoyoos, Oliver, and Penticton) is where the main desert is, and the wineries. Oliver in particular is rich in wineries, making some of the best wine in Canada. Osoyoos has a desert interpretation centre.

Barkerville is a ghost town, where people dress and act as if it was around 1900 or so.

The Kootenays has several hot spring resorts. Radium is well known, and Ainsworth is a small, off the beaten track one.

Nelson is thought of as an artistic community. I found it more of a hippy one - it looks like they stopped the clocks there sometime in 1969!

Just a few places worth seeing - there are lots more!

The Kootenays the best place I've ever lived, there are nice places all around though

Try:

- mountain biking or skiing in Rossland

- explore Nelson, it's a nice arsty town

- Any outdoor activity in Golden, they also have quite a few nice restaurants for a town that size

- Take a canoe trip around the Bowron lakes (it's beautiful!)

- I took a pack trip in the Gold bridge area, it was a lot of fun

- West coast trail

- My dad took a kayak trip up the coast this summer, the pictures made me jealous, that's next on my list

Yes, although both were named after Captain George Vancouver, a British explorer. Vancouver, BC is located just north of the Washington/BC border and is the largest city in British Columbia. Vancouver, Wa (Washington) is located just north of the Washington/Oregon border in the United States.
